Speaker: Beverly Voloshin
Wednesday, December February 12, 2025
7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Creekside Room, Dominican University, San Rafael (+via Zoom)
Campus map
To frame her personal experience, Beverly will offer a short history of the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict and explain the current map (Israel, Gaza, and the occupied
Palestinian territory—commonly called the West Bank). She will speak about her
experiences teaching at one of the Palestinian universities and about conditions in the
West Bank, a subject not adequately covered in our media. Being very aware of how
strong emotions are regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the current war, her goal
is to shed some light, but not heat, in the hope that we will find a way to better days.
Biography
Beverly Voloshin is professor emerita of English and American Literature at San Francisco
State University. She is also a mother and grandmother. When she retired from SF State,
she was a Fulbright Scholar teaching literature at Al-Quds University in the occupied
Palestinian territory. This happened to be during the emergence of the Covid pandemic in
Israel/Palestine, and the second half of the spring semester of 2020 had to be continued
on Zoom. Since then, she has been invited to teach a range of courses (in English), all
new for her, all primarily on Zoom except for short visits. She was in Jerusalem and the
West Bank on 7 October 2023, when the current terrible war began.
