Firefighter: A Career Spanning Culturaland Environmental Change

Speaker: Helene Drumm

Helene Drumm shares her experiences as a firefighter—facing not only fire but medical emergencies and technical rescues, working in a firehouse team, and maintaining equipment. She was involved in the response to the Paradise fire and will discuss the effect of climate change on fires over her recent career.

Helene Drumm was the first female firefighter hired by the Ross Valley Fire Department, serving the Fairfax area to Ross. She worked there for 25 years until her recent retirement. Before that, she earned a BS in Food Science and Technology from UC Davis, leading to jobs in quality control for Mother’s Cookies and biotech. She was, for a time, a professional bike racer.

Helene was especially happy to serve as a firefighter in the part of Marin where she grew up, although, in her duty, she was called further afield.
